Squall Line With A Stacked Shelf Cloud

October 28, 2004

October 28, 2004: On this day, an early morning squall line moved into northern San Diego County from Orange County. The line produced a surprisingly photogenic shelf cloud along its gust front. Since I am just now creating this page (March 30, 2006), I cannot recall much from this event. I remember that there was a fair bit of lightning activity, but I do not recall what kind of winds were observed along this line. I was unable to get any unobstructed shots of the guts front / shelf cloud since I was schedule to head into work that morning. I will try to look up some of the data from that day in the hope that I will be able to include more information here about this event.

October 28, 2004: A low-topped squall line moving in from Orange County produced a very nice shelf cloud along its gust front as it approached Oceanside. This is a crop/pan from a larger image that I took.

This uncropped image is of the approaching squall line and its shelf cloud.

Another cropped image which shows the shelf cloud as it moved over Camp Pendelton.

Yet another crop of the shelf cloud.

Uncropped image of the squall line as it approached from the northwest. It appears from this shot that there may be some strong inflow on the southeast side of the storm.
