Independence Day

Fourth of July Parade, 2007: Julian, CA

Our first Fourth of July here in Julian, and what a HOT one it was. Temperatures reached an astonishing 106 degrees during the parade, one of the hottest days EVER on record here in town. The following day it was 100 degrees at 9:00 am! Anyway, the town was all decked out for Independence Day and everyone came out to watch the annual parade. For a small town, this was one heck of a long parade! An hour and half or more of floats and bands etc. Even Nicole made a star appearance! She helped our neighbor Robert walk his sled dogs down the parade route. A fun day for sure. Enjoy the photos.

The crowd waits patiently in record heat.

Early birds are rewarded with a shady spot in front of the historic Julian Hotel.

WWII Fly-over... one of two such fly-overs.

These photos were taken during the higher altitude passes. There were numerous, extremely low altutide passes as well (literally 100-150 ft above the deck), however these passes occurred before I had a chance to set up the camera.

The parade begins with an additional series of fly-overs about a half hour later.

All eyes skyward.

These boys didn't fly as low as the previous guys, but still within a few hundred feet of the ground.

The crowd fills the street, all fighting for the best fly-ovre photos.

Bombs away!

One last pass with a wide angle!

A very old chain-driven mail truck.

The Grand Pacific Band.

You get the idea by now.

Nicole leads a team of sled dogs down Main Street. Robert is driving the sled. Buffalo Bill is in front, holding up the show.

There are normally more dogs on the gang line, but Yerri chewed his way free. He's being walked next to the sled.

Screamer (in the lead) looks a little hot. Don't worry, he had plenty of shade and water about 5 minutes later.

Don't mess with the locals!

Yes, this guy's shoes and socks really are painted on! Oh, and that's the lightest bike frame ever invented... yes, that bike's frame is made of air (for the slower folks in the crowd, there's no bike frame).

An old Chevy truck cruises down Main Street.

That's about as old as they come.

Frisky Floozy

We finish the day off at the Julian Pie Company.
